Animals in the Field

Another recent meme that I’ve missed is related to animals and critters in the field.

How many of us have run into snakes? This one is from Darwin, California.
Our professor, the snake charmer.

While doing field camp in New Zealand, we came across a number of interesting critters as well.

Cows:
Guto making friends

Sheep:
Sheep near Wharariki

Seals:
Sleeping seal

Wetas:
HUGE bug!

Wekas:
Weird New Zealand Bird - Weka

Cicadas:
Weird Bug - Cicada

    Rattlesnakes. I remember scouting a rockpile for interesting minerals, and chucking a rock at the far end every 5 minutes to reaffirm the current location of a rattler lurking under the pile. And the rattlesnakes in central California get *huge*…

    Yeah, totally agree.

    Snakes, especially rattlers out here, are very common. It sure makes it interesting to work in the field.

    Nice collection of animals. And a much larger (longer) snake than the one I showed – but it’s not a rattler, is it? Some crazy dude is holding it! (That’s not you, is it?)
