Hurricane Ike Aftermath – Galveston Photos

2008 September 14

This past weekend, Hurricane Ike slammed into Texas as a category 2 hurricane. Despite warnings to leave the area or face “certain death,” many did not evacuate from towns and cities in the hurricane’s path. Rescue operations are currently underway.

It will be a few days before we know the cost and extent of damage. Expect to see some incredible imagery from NASA and the USGS in the next few weeks showing drastic changes to the coastline and surrounding terrain from this hurricane’s awesome power. [Update: (09/16/2008) - The USGS has released before and after photos of the Bolivar Peninsula. See them here. ]

Here are some photos from the city of Galveston itself.

Sitting in hotel in LA trying to find anything about my town back in TX. Live in Seabrook along 146 between Baytown and Galveston Island. Have had no luck in finding any word. Are your people still in the area?? If so, do they have fight enough in them to go to Seabrook and inspect damage to the coastal side of 146? Seems our towns officials have a ‘God” or “authority’ complex running about them. To my understanding NO PRESS, NP PHOTOS, NO NOTHING has made it through their perimiters around town. I can’t say as of today – 09- 16-08 – it is still the same. Know the local police deptartment is made up of a lot of “Barney Fifes” (old Andy Griffith tv shows) and are/were no help at all. As one could not even tell me the website listing for town. I no path of destruction extends long and wide, my heart, thoughts and sympathy with all affected, as I’m affected as well, with no word, no admittance in my town to inspect my home (or the family cat left in house) I’d appreciate any word, pictures, comments, anything at all really concerning the state of SEABROOK ALONG TODDVELLE ROAD. Many thanks and keep up the great work, pics are (?) AWEsome (in a disbieving way)

    Hi Linda,

I’m sorry to hear you are holed up somewhere far away from your home. Unfortunately, I have no information on Seabrook for you. These photos are mostly things I’ve pulled off various wire services and such.

If I do hear anything, I will post here.

Also, you can search for photos via Flickr as well. Here is a link searching for the most recent photos that are named or tagged “Seabrook.”

One of the photos I posted above is actually of Highway 146 *in* Seabrook, according to a Flickr user:
