Augustine Erupts

Augustine's steaming summit, December 2005The US Geologic Survey reports that Mount Augustine Volcano in the Cook Strait of Alaska erupted this morning at 4:44 a.m. Alaska Standard Time (9:44 a.m. EST). Keep up to date with the Alaska Volcano Observatory’s (AVO) Augustine activity page. Highlights include the seismic record from the Augustine webicorder, and two webcams (both socked in at this writing).

    Could the melting of all the glaciers be influencing volcanic activity? Just from all the weight of that ice shifting off the plates, kind of like when you step out of a fishing boat and it rocks up and down in the water, could taking all that weight off the continental plates cause volcanic activity as rocks shift and magma is displaced?
