Rapid Mountain Uplift

An article by Ghosh et al. in this month’s Science magazine describes a new stable isotope technique to derive paleoaltimetry data that indicate extremely rapid uplift of a region of the Bolivian Andes. They hypothesize that the data might be explained by detachment of the dense lithospheric root of the mountain belt, as previously demonstrated in the Sierra Nevada range in California.

Augustine Erupts

Augustine's steaming summit, December 2005The US Geologic Survey reports that Mount Augustine Volcano in the Cook Strait of Alaska erupted this morning at 4:44 a.m. Alaska Standard Time (9:44 a.m. EST). Keep up to date with the Alaska Volcano Observatory’s (AVO) Augustine activity page. Highlights include the seismic record from the Augustine webicorder, and two webcams (both socked in at this writing).

My apologies for the lack of updates during the last month! I’m currently attending field camp in New Zealand and haven’t had much access to the internet. I’ll return to the United States in mid February!
